To fringe or not to fringe…

By  |

To follow on from my last blog on Winter hair trends, I want to elaborate on choosing the perfect fringe for your face shape…

Don’t rule out a fringe so quickly. I often find that clients avoid fringes as they are under the impression that it can change their look considerably or make too much of a statement. However, fringes can in fact, enhance your features and become your best accessory.

Whether it be side swept, middle parted, eye lash grazing, a blunt statement, micro, curtain face framing or gorgeous celebrity bangs, here are some valuable tips to help you choose the perfect fringe to suit your look.

How to determine your face shape

Pull your hair back away from your face and draw an imaginary line around your face when looking in the mirror and try to identify:

Is your your face long or short?

What is the widest part of your face?

Is your chin pointy/round/square?

There are many different shapes but some of the most common are: oval, round, square, oblong, heart, pear and diamond. Here are some suggestions to help you better understand what suits you and why. Always remember, there are sometimes many other factors to consider which is why it is always best to seek a professional opinion.

Oval

If you have an oval face shape, your face gracefully tapers toward chin, wider forehead and prominent cheekbones. An oval shape, is the ideal face shape for most fringe cuts. Alexa Chung is a great example of someone who can pull off all kinds of fringes.

Round

Round faces are widest at the cheeks and the face width and length of face are almost the same. Ideally, you would like a fringe that cuts the width of your face.A long sweeping side-swept works well (See Michelle Williams). A short fringe worn with confidence looks greats too.

Square

Forehead, cheekbones and jawline are almost the same width when you have a square shaped  and face. Your square jawline is a prominent feature. Keep the edges of the fringe soft and taper at the sides. Avoid straight lines.

Oblong is similar to square, just more stretched out (Olivia Wilde).

Heart

Heart face strongly tapers towards chin, chin tends to be pointy and forehead may be a prominent feature. Go for an eyelash grazing fringe, remember to keep it narrow. adding a fringe can instantly switch that main focal point to your eyes and check bones taking the focus away from the chin!

Pear

Pear shaped faces are widest at the jaw and narrow at the hairline. The aim is to widen the top half of your face and narrow the bottom half, think heavy and straight or even long and soft. Steer clear of the middle part.

Diamond

If you have a diamond face shape, it will be highly angular and somewhat bony. The widest part will be at the temples. Go for bardot bangs, centre parted, side swept- even micro. Avoid heavy and graphic shapes.
