DIY plywood projects for the home

By  |

A single sheet of plywood does not cost much at all. You can pick up a piece 2400mm x 1200mm x 17mm at Bunnings for $65/sheet.

In the DIY world this can mean endless possibilities.

If you are feeling a bit creative and adventurous here are 5 suggestions for DIY plywood pieces to add to your home.

Start simple:
1. Make the most out of your couch arm by adding a coffee table to rest your tea and biscuits on. Firstly, measure the width of your armrest. You can get plywood cut into desired lengths at Bunnings, so just know what sizes you need when you make the trip to buy the sheet. In this case you will need three pieces, simply glue them together and there you go, the perfect customised coffee table arm rest.

2. Build your own bedhead; a single sheet of plywood can make the perfect backboard for a bedhead. If you feel like your bedroom needs a bit of a lift, a bedhead is the perfect centre piece to finish off the room. It draws the eyes to a focal point in the room and grounds the bed. It also provides an anchor to host a wall light or two. If you are feeling daring you could even paint the plywood your favourite colour or whitewash/stain to add some depth.

3. Put a little TLC into your kid’s room. If you are limited for space, this desk solution is perfect to give your child the area they need to get their homework done. It will give them a sense of ownership and space to add their own décor or their favourite toy/ornament. You may just need some sturdy brackets, or a steel beam to secure this box to the wall. Chalkboard paint on the wall will transform the backboard into a writeable surface.

4. Build your own entertainment unit, than choose your legs. If you like the Scandinavian look then a plywood entertainment unit is your style. I have done it myself at home and it was simple, easy and looks great. You can customise it how you like with as many slots, drawers, and doors as you need to suit your home. I would suggest a light oil to ensure the unit doesn’t stain or mark easily.

5. Feeling a little more adventurous? Need more storage at home? Then plywood is the perfect material to build your own shelves. If you have the perfect space, then plywood is your answer. It may take a bit of planning but the results will be worth it.
