How to prepare for the perfect fake tan

By  |

Most of us can agree that trying to achieve the perfect ‘fake tan’ can be a little bit daunting. Whether it’s a ‘do it yourself ‘ job , or in a beauty salon let’s be honest, NO ONE wants to look like a human size Dorito.

Preparing your skin for a brilliant fake tan, we believe, should begin sooner than what you may think. Exfoliating the days leading up to your fake tan application isn’t going to cut it. For the perfect canvas, exfoliating should be done on a daily basis for at least a couple of weeks prior. Also keeping your skin hydrated daily is a must (especially after exfoliating) as this will absolutely ensure a perfect, long lasting tan every time.

So, if you are applying your own self tan or leaving it to the experts? Here are a few handy tips:

Prepare

Prepare your skin for the perfect canvas; exfoliate and hydrate your skin. Pay particular attention to rough or dry areas.

Remove any moisturiser, make-up or deodorant

Ensure that you have removed any traces of moisturiser, make-up or deodorant. If you deliberately made a point of not moisturising the day of your tan application, keep in mind that you may still have moisturiser on from the night before that you need to remove thoroughly.

Wear gloves or a mitt

If you are applying your own fake tan, always make sure your hands are protected, there is nothing worse than too much fake tan on your hands.

Clothing

Wear loose clothing and shoes that won’t leave you with unwanted streaks ( no runners/sneakers).

What to Bring

If you are getting your tan done at a salon, remember to bring  an umbrella or a hooded top in case of rain. If you are thinking about what to wear whilst having the tan done, the perfect tan is always best when you are in your birthday suit. Otherwise, you will find that most salons have disposable underwear.

To help keep your tan looking fabulous for longer

Hydrate

Hydrate! Hydrate! Hydrate!! A Dewy glowing tan is the difference between a great tan and a not so great tan.

PH Balanced wash

Use a ph balanced body wash to ensure your perfect tan doesn’t fade quicker than it should.

Tan extender

Use a tan extender to prolong the life of your tan. Most tan extenders have a gradual tan within them, so by applying them daily, you will keep your tan for longer and your tan will also come off evenly.

So, why wait? Its time to get your tan on!
