Spring Racing: Fashions on the Field edition
September is already in full swing and we all know what that means, especially for us Melbournians: Spring Racing season is here! It is truly a unique time of year where both men and women get dressed up from head to toe in whatever they want. A time to let your hair down with your friends or mingle with the beautiful specimens that swan around the exclusive marquees, to watch what everyone knows as the race that stops the nation.
For the most part, we are there for all of those reasons and hopefully we pocket some winnings too! There is one part of the Spring Racing Carnival though, that is really what I consider the best part and that is Fashions on the Field.
I’ll take you through some looks to inspire you to get up on stage and showcase some really stylish pieces. Think lace detailing, bold colours and shapes, not to mention some seriously beautiful millinery. Enjoy!
Caulfield Cup
Caulfield Cup is all about modern, fresh styling. A structured dress like this By Johnny design is what I’m feeling. It’s bold, yet feminine and I just love the shape. Modern, classy and cute all in one. I would wear this with a headpiece in a contrasting colour like this Richard Nylon one. It ties in the feminine feel with pink flowers and netting without taking anything away from the dress.
Derby Day
We all know Derby Day as the classic race meet where you wear solely black and white. And if you want to partake in Fashions on the Field you will have to turn heads by wearing bold, clever and unique styles. It is one of my favourite days as it really gets women thinking outside the box. You can work a really modern look or a classic style. I have found two different styles to get you thinking about what statement you want to make.
Modern
Whitesuede have this amazing leather dress that I think could work really well. Paired with a headpiece like this one from Natalie Bikicki and you’ve got a sleek, modern and stylish all in one outfit.
Traditional
I just couldn’t go past this dress from Thurley. It really is a beautifully designed dress, with black lace detailing on a white backing. It oozes elegance. The shape of this dress is the perfect mix of structure and fluidity. As the dress is quite intricate I would work it back with a sleek, bold hat like this one from Ford Millinery.
Melbourne Cup
As Melbourne Cup is the main race day, I would really be looking for something that is bold and showcases this year’s current trends. I am really loving this look from Scanlan and Theodore. This is the perfect top and skirt combination as you have a structured off the shoulder top, together with a soft lace skirt and put together perfectly with accessories in a deeper shade of red.
For your headpiece you can wear something like this structured, on trend design by Studio ANISS . It’s modern, yet feminine and really showcases one of this year’s top race wear trends, metallic.
Oaks Day
Oaks Day, as we all know, is all about the ladies. Florals, colour and femininity and I have found the perfect dress from Thurley. A black lace dress with a beautiful, bold floral design. The beauty of this dress is that there are so many different colours in the design that it will give you plenty of options when it comes to choosing the right headpiece. The obvious choice here would be a floral fascinator but I’ve chosen a simple, yet bold turban style fascinator from Louise Macdonald Millinery to give it a more modern and unique look.
Finishing touches.
The accessories that you pair with your outfit are just as important. Try sleek, simple designs that won’t take away from your outfit.
