Moving and setting up a new house

By  |

So, for the past couple of weeks, I have been packing up my house to move interstate from Melbourne to Sydney. This process is arduous and stressful at the best of times and even harder with a one year old… So, i knew this process needed to be as effective and efficient as possible.

Here are some of the things I have learnt along the way:

Must have items for the big move

– Sharpie or permanent markers (2-3 in case some get lost)
– Duct tape
– Bubble wrap
– A few extra hands
– Plenty of boxes [I highly underestimated how much I had collected over the years]

Label every box with contents and room location

When you have a husband like mine who literally clears a whole shelf into one box and does not sort through what is important or needed, teaching this labeling process is very important. It is vital when packing to have a:

Keep pile

Salvos pile

Throw out pile.

You don’t need all of those things you have accumulated along the years or months ;0. So its a great time to de- clutter. Once you have packed a box, label what is inside and which room it goes to in your new house. That way when the removalists arrive at your new home, they know where to take your belongings without the constant direction.

Extra hands make light work

I highly advise getting additional help from a friend or relative. Even if it is to distract and/or take the one year old out of the house while you run around madly trying to pack up the house. Otherwise, every time you put something in a box; it just ends up back out again or taken for a walk into another room.

Finish off the place you are leaving

Moving also allows you to finish all those small jobs you have been meaning to do for ages but never got around to doing it. Like fixing up those patches of paint work on the walls, or re-tiling the bathroom, or deciding to completely re-do your kitchen [which we have done in the last month. It was so crazy, but worth it in the end]

Arriving at the new house

Once all your belongings arrive at your new pad, placing all the furniture is really important as it allows you to see what items you may need to get to make the place feel like home. Plus it’s a great excuse to go out a buy a few bits on the cheap to make everything feel new, fresh and inviting.

These are my tips when moving and setting up a new home. What are some of your successful moving stories?
