The Finishing Touch: Details on how to style your home

By  |

Many of us have an idea when it comes to styling our home. It’s a mixture of furniture you love combined with details that you gravitate toward. When you want to style your house from top to bottom with all the finishing touches, it can feel like a massive task, but it does generally take some time to collate all your ideas and find the right pieces. Remember,  styling your home is a multi-layering process. Here, we will show you how to decorate your home like it’s in a magazine shoot.

Determine your vision

Read through a few different magazines, books and even online to find a clear vision. Then summarise all of these until you have one or two images that depicts your personal style. This starts the ball rolling and allows you to focus on the vision.

Start with the big expensive items

Once you have determined your style, you can start to collect the big items like the sofa, arm chair, coffee table, bed, side tables etc. These will fill majority of the space and allow you to see your vision come to life. Really plan your layout and measure the size of your items to ensure they will fit well in the space. Items that are too large can make the space feel cramped. Then move on to your art, lamps, rugs & pillows. Finally add the smaller items last including your accessories, books and greenery.

Layers, like an onion

Rugs are the best way to make your home feel warm and cosy. If you have hardwood floors, dress it with a rug. This will ground the space and also add colour and texture. You could also change your window coverings; this could include blinds, curtains and/or shutters. This will help with privacy as well as adding an extra layer of depth to the space and really finishes off a room.

Every area has a method

Styling just doesn’t happen. It takes time and experimentation to work out what works best. Go room by room through your house and add the right pieces that suit the space. For example; in the bathroom add the towels, bath mat and baskets. Once you have these items sorted you can enhance the space with extra pieces like a jewellery tray, soap dispenser or plants. It takes practise so don’t give up on the first go.

Tidiness is vital

If you spend all this time styling your home it is important to keep these great looking spaces clean and neat. Otherwise, all of your hard work will get lost amongst the clutter and mess. This will allow you to enjoy the beauty of your home on a daily basis. When you have unexpected guests, all your hard work will pay off and there will be no need to tidy up. 😉

Décor needs to look good and be functional

Most designers will only have pieces that are functional. If you narrow down your pieces to the rule; if it’s not both functional and pretty then it is not to be seen. This will help guide you in the right direction.

Best kept secret is a bit of greenery

Plants add depth, warmth and freshness to any space. Use plants as your décor. Whether it is a herb garden for those with a masterchef within, a succulent for those with a black thumb or some beautiful flowers to make your home smell divine.
