Makeup mistakes you don’t know you’re making

By  |

I’ll be honest, before becoming a makeup artist I committed many many makeup sins.

But it comforts me to know we have all made makeup mistakes over the years. I remember that time I took bronzer to a music festival to ”touch up” my makeup in the summer heat… only to discover I looked like a sparkly Oompa Loompa by the end of the day.

Or the time I thought I could pull off an Amy Winehouse eyeliner, what was I thinking? No one but Amy could do that.

Here are some of the most common makeup mistakes I hear ladies making and how to fix them.

Not Blending Face To Neck

Foundation should not be worn like a mask. Blend, blend, blend ladies!

Whenever applying foundation always make sure to blend out towards the hairline and down onto the neck. You don’t have to apply foundation to your neck just use what is left on the brush, this prevents that “mask” line and also makes sure your neck and face colour match. Follow Kelly Osbourne’s lead (on the left, of course)

Wearing Waterproof Mascara Every Day

Unless you are a synchronised swimmer or find yourself getting rained on a lot, there really isn’t any need to wear waterproof mascara every day.

It is not only super dehydrating for your lashes but all that extra scrubbing it takes to clean it off can snap your lashes. Nobody wants little broken stump lashes 🙁

Lining Only The Outside Of Your Lips

This may have been huge in the 90’s and yes a little of the 90’s fashion does seem to be filtering into today’s fashion – think chokers, sparkles and pretty much Kylie Jenner…

My tip for liner is find a shade that is the same as your lipstick and apply all over the lip. It’ll help your lippy stay put and last longer. So if your lipstick fades you won’t end up with just a line around your lips looking like Pammy Anderson circa 1994.

Not Cleaning Your Brushes

You use makeup on your face (duh, I hear you say) which means whilst you are applying your foundation etc. you are also collecting oils and bacteria from the surface of the skin. They are then being absorbed into your brushes only to be put back on your face the next time you use them.

Using dirty brushes on your face, not only can cause breakouts, but the build-up of product doesn’t allow your brushes to be used to their full potential.

I suggest using a brush cleaner a couple of times a week and shampooing and conditioning once every two weeks. This will keep your brushes hygienically clean and super soft for perfect application.

Removing Mascara On Your Eyelids With Makeup Remover

You’ve just smashed out an amazing smokey eye and you think “I’m just going to pop on one more coat of mascara”, then bam! Mascara all over your eyelids.

Do not go for the makeup remover!

It’ll just wipe off all your hard work, instead wait two minutes until that mascara has dried. Then grab a dry cotton bud and gently rub the mascara off. I guarantee your eyeshadow will stay in place and the mascara will be gone.

Wearing Too Many Colours On Your Lids

Your eyeshadow pallet may come with ten different colours, but it doesn’t mean you have to wear them all at the same time. Instead choose three: A medium for your lids and crease, darker for the outer corner and a light for the inner corner and to highlight under the brow. Check out this step by step:

Not Setting Your Concealer

Concealer is great for covering dark circles under the eyes, but do you find half way through the day it is all creased? This creates the illusion of wrinkles or lines you swear were not there in the morning.

Fear not, you haven’t aged dramatically in the space of a few hours, it is just the heat of your skin causing the concealer to slip into the natural creases of your skin.

The number one tip for preventing this is set your concealer with a translucent powder or powder foundation. This will set your concealer so it stays put.

There’s nothing to be ashamed of. We’ve all been guilty of these at one time or another 😉
